"Don't Be Such a Scientist" with Randy Olson - Island Press Free Webinar
This great green event is over now!
Why is it that only 43% of the public believe there is solid evidence of global warming? Why is procuring any sort of legislative action on climate change causing uproars and battles throughout Congress? Randy Olson, author of Don't be Such a Scientist, has some ideas. He contends it's all a communication problem. In a webinar on November 19 at 1PM EST, Olson will draw on his own hilarious-and at times humiliating-evolution from science professor to Hollywood filmmaker and offer his perspective on communicating science at a time when information and facts are more important to the discussion than ever.
With a recent Pew Research survey revealing a sharp decline in public belief that there is solid evidence of global warming, dropping from 71% last year to 57% now, a new strategy is desperately needed. Marine biologist and Flock of Dodos and Sizzle filmmaker Randy Olson will share his secrets of talking substance in an age of style, explaining that the key to reaching people about complex issues is to stay true to the facts while tapping into something more primordial, more irrational, and ultimately more human. Deemed "a must-read for anyone who cares about science, and the problems we have engaging the public," by RealClimate.org, Don't Be Such a Scientist addresses the common concern of any profession that deals heavily in esoteric facts and data. As Olson says, the public's interest just needs to be piqued. He argues that people won't care about an issue if they can't understand its jargon. Science needs a fresh new face to dispel indifference-to remain substantive while adding style to go with it.
